More news of winter work

Engineering update

It's been a little while since our last engineering update, but despite the weather we have been moving forwards on many fronts! Our main thrust has focused on setting up the frames and ensuring their square-ness in anticipation of riveting! Also whilst the winter weather has been against us we have been busy making a start on re-furbishing various parts of the motion. Cleaning, inspecting & re-machining where necessary. Off site the cylinder block is progressing well and should be ready for collection within the next month or two!

After a successful 2018, keeping to our predicted time line, and with the initial erection of the main frames we hope to achieve even more in the forthcoming year!

The plan for 2019 has been formulated and we hope to carry out the following before the end of the year.

We will be continuing to set up and square off the frames which will allow us to ream the holes and rivet the frames together into one chassis unit.  Once this has been done we will be able to set up and fit the new cylinders between the frames and secure them with fitted bolts.

The next task will then to finish the machining of the horn guides and fit them to the loco chassis. this will allow us to look forward to being able to have a rolling chassis .

The rear drag box will also need to be assembled and riveted in place.  This will give the rear end of the chassis good stability.

Whilst this is going on we will also continue with the painting of the remaining wheel sets and a start made on painting the new chassis.

Another process necessary before the production of a rolling chassis is the re-metalling of the axle boxes.  This will be carried out in the main works using our own labour.  They will also need to be machined round following the addition of the new white metal.

There are also items to be manufactured such as  new valves, horn wedges, slide bars and leading horn liners.  These will be water cut or cast and all will need machining.

We will also be drilling and fitting the new running plates and side valances, all of which will lead to our aspiration of a rolling chassis.

Our 18 month "look ahead" includes working towards re-wheeling, the manufacture of side tanks using as much of the originals as sensible and the manufacture of a new bunker most of which has succumbed to the ravages of the weather.  We will start to look into the reproduction or overhaul of a set of SECR pattern buffers for the loco which will return it to a more original appearance. A start will be made on the miles of pipework that is needed for the loco, our start will be on the vacuum and steam heat pipes.

The engineering team will also start work on refurbishing the motion and repairing any parts that need work.  A set of springs will also be required to complete the chassis.

The work will be reliant on available funding, the more we can raise the more work we can do.

I am sure you would like to see the loco working as much as we do, and to help us to reach the stage of a working locomotive, we need all the help we can get!  Please donate as much as you can afford, no matter how small, it all makes a difference.  Or if you have items that you would like to donate for our sales stands or items suitable for auction (model railways or  railwayana, we would be pleased to receive them.

To donate on line, please go to our BT MyDonate page:
or use the QR code below.

PLEASE NOTE
The BT My Donate page will be removed by BT on the 30th June.  However, we will have another donations page up and running by that time!

If you would like to make a regular donation, please ask for a Standing Order form by email to the address below, please also use this address for enquiries and offers of physical help.

There has been loads of work going on over the winter!

During a visit to Sheffield Park on Saturday, I took a series of pictures illustrating the progress made during the cold and dark months since my last report.  To the "untrained eye" there would appear to be not too much difference between the before and after scenes.  However to get to that stage many hours of work have been carried out.  For example the levelling and squaring of the frames has taken place, which doesn't sound much work, but it took three solid weekends working up to 8 hours a day to get it right. This is just to the temporary bolting stage!  Once the riveting commences, there will be a need for constant monitoring and checking before and after each riveting operation!
The pair of rear cylinder covers thoroughly cleaned and painted (all pictures Clive Emsley)
The pair of front cylinder covers thoroughly cleaned and painted
The front valve chest cover

Pair of expansion links cleaned and burnished to within an inch of their lives!
Various pieces of linkage having been thoroughly cleaned and painted
More linkages, valve spindles and slide bars having been dealt with
The Front and Rear buffer beams being prepared for erection onto the frames
The new frame plates bolted up with the original stretchers and the first part of the new rear drag box
The new rear dragbox plate bolted into position
The original stretchers and motion bracket bolted into place
And finally!
Jim has painted up a new board to accompany the bright red money box!
Projected work for next year
During the coming year we are hoping to produce a rolling chassis.  This will involve sourcing springs, re-metaling and machining the axle boxes and machining various components.  We will also be aiming to add the running plate and valance to the chassis.  Other items will be added to the loco as the year progresses also.

The BT MyDonate Page

It is with a sad heart that we have just learned that BT MyDonate will be totally closing and not be accepting donations after the 30th June.  The donations made via the BT MyDonate page will be accepted up to midnight on the 30th, and forwarded to us in the usual way, together with the GiftAid you may have added.

If you have been thinking of making donations via this platform please do so now, and definitely before the cut off date of the 30th June.

We have been in contact with the Trust administrator for the MyDonate page and was told that he had only been notified this week!  The Trust (who administer our page) are actively looking into a new donations platform.  Once we know which donations platform the Bluebell Trust are using we will let you know.

In the mean whilst thank you for your donations so far, and those to come in the future.

We can still take donations in cash or by cheque (made payable to the Bluebell Railway Trust) if they are accompanied by one of our donation forms you can add gift aid to your contribution.  It is also possible to set up a standing order donation via the Bluebell Railway Trust again by printing and using one of our forms (below).

A heart felt thank you from The Project Team

Welcome to 2019!

Happy new year to all of our supporters.  The Fenchurch Fund / Project 27 hope you had a good festive break and are looking forward to the year ahead.

It has been a little quiet news wiser over the Christmas period, but work has been going on with work being carried out most weekends.  I am hoping to get an update to pass on shortly, but until I do, I have been looking through the archives and scanning some pictures of 27 and other small locos, a few of which I will share with you now.

No.27 Primrose leaves Horsted Keynes bound for Sheffield Park on the 15th September 1962  (S.C.Nash)
27 rests in Sheffield Park Yard in 1961 (N. Hamshire)
No 27 in the pump house siding  minus her chimney on the 10th March 1968 (W.L.Anderson)

27 double heading with 72 at the Bluebell on Parade event in may 1974 (Norman Blake)
31178 at, it is believed, Stewarts Lane circa 1955 (Fenchurch Fund Collection)
323 in SECR Grey livery in the bay at Otford some time just after WW1 (John Speller)
As we started out as to raise funds for small locos, and at the time Fenchurch in particular, I have added a picture of her here too.  It is hoped that she will be working for het 150th anniversary of being introduced to traffic in 2022.
2636 at, it is believed, Newhaven around 1930 (Real Photographs)
The work on Southern Railway Loco No.A27 will be, as ever, reliant on available funding, the more we can raise the more work we can do.

I am sure you would like to see 27 working as much as we do, and to help us to reach the stage of a working locomotive, we need all the help we can get!  Please donate as much as you can afford, no matter how small, it all makes a difference.  Or if you have items that you would like to donate for our sales stands or items suitable for auction (model railways or  railwayana), we would be pleased to receive them.
